My book - Birds of New Zealand: Collective Nouns
I have something exciting to announce… I illustrated a book!!
Illustrating a book has always been a dream of mine, so collaborating with local publishers Harper Collins has been a dream come true! The book is 128 pages, chock full of colourful illustrations, and also includes an introduction and facts about each bird, written by me!
The theme of the book is ‘collective nouns’, in case you don’t know what that means, collective nouns are the group term for a particular species of animal; think a murder of crows, or a charm of finches. While there are many terms for overseas birds, there haven’t been many coined for our New Zealand birds… until now.
It was so much fun coming up with the collective nouns, some of my favourites are ‘a siren of saddlebacks’ and ‘a loot of weka’. Each collective noun relates to the specific bird species, whether it’s because of a call they make, a particular quirk or behaviour or their unique colouring.
The book is available in stores now! If you want to pick yourself up a copy I recommend supporting your local bookshop, as the book will be available from all good bookshops around the country. If you’re outside of NZ or want to order online here’s a link for mightyape.co.nz
