Birds of aotearoa : Collective nouns

Birds of Aotearoa : Collective nouns is my debut book, and as the title suggests, it’s all about NZ birds. The book is 128 pages, chock full of colourful illustrations of 90 bird species, and also includes an introduction, facts and information about each birds conservation status.

The theme of the book is ‘collective nouns’. Collective nouns are the group term for a particular species of animal; think a murder of crows, or a charm of finches. While there are many terms for overseas birds, there haven’t been many coined for our New Zealand birds. I’d always wondered how collective nouns came about and who decided they would become the accepted term for a species, so when Harper Collins contacted me asking if I’d like to illustrate a book all about collective nouns obviously I jumped at the chance.

Many, many hours of work went into the making of this book, not only the illustrating but also the researching of collective nouns, coming up with new nouns and writing the bird facts. I am immensely proud of this book and have been really humbled by the amount of amazing positive feedback I’ve received about it. I am so grateful for Harper Collins for choosing me to illustrate the book, it’s been a dream come true!
